EIC Pre-Accelerator: A New Opportunity for Deep-Tech Startups in Widening Countries
The European Innovation Council (EIC) is set to launch a new funding opportunity for deep-tech startups in Widening countries through the upcoming EIC Pre-Accelerator call. With a budget of €20 million, this initiative aims to close the gap between Europe’s established innovation hubs and regions that are still catching up.
Boosting Innovation in Widening Countries
Widening countries have often struggled to secure funding in competitive European programs. According to the EIC Board Statement on Widening Participation, in 2022, only 7.1% of EIC Accelerator funding was allocated to Widening countries, with seven of these countries not represented at all. The share of funding for the EIC Pathfinder was 8.5% in the same year. Recognizing this underrepresentation, the European Commission has set a goal to increase participation to at least 15% across all EIC instruments. The EIC Pre-Accelerator is part of the effort to make this happen by helping startups grow, attract investors, and scale successfully.
For early-stage deep-tech innovators, this call is an excellent chance to secure €300,000 to €500,000 in funding, covering 70% of project costs. The expectation is that participants will use this support to strengthen their business and attract further investment through the EIC Accelerator or other sources.
Why Intellectual Property Matters
A strong Intellectual Property (IP) strategy is key to success in EIC funding. Deep-tech innovations require robust IP protection for long-term growth. At EIC Winter School 2025, where RISE was actively involved, experts highlighted strategic IP management as a crucial factor for scaling innovations.
Startups should consider a comprehensive IP approach, including trademarks, industrial design registration, and competitor monitoring. The Unitary Patent system, introduced last year, offers a cost-effective way to secure patents across multiple countries, making strategic IP planning more important than ever.
Strengthening Innovation Ecosystems
Success in the EIC Pre-Accelerator will be determined by how well startups develop their businesses, scale, and succeed in the market, but also by the innovation ecosystem that surrounds them. At RISE, we have recognized this and are focused on improving innovation ecosystems in Widening countries by establishing stronger connections between different stakeholders, ensuring startups have the right support to grow and attract investment.
With the call expected to open soon, startups should stay informed and begin preparations. A solid innovation strategy, clear IP protections, and a strong business case will be key to success.
What This Means for Deep-Tech Startups
The upcoming EIC Pre-Accelerator is a unique opportunity for deep-tech startups in Widening countries. Beyond funding, it helps them refine their business strategy, strengthen their IP assets, and secure their place in Europe’s innovation landscape.
For startups looking to turn research into commercial success, now is the time to explore how they fit into the EIC’s vision and start preparing for this call.
With the right approach, this could be a game-changer.
